Bio

Brendan Ahern is the Chief Investment Officer of KraneShares, a suite of China-focused exchange-traded funds. Brendan joined KraneShares in 2013 where he leads the firm’s China research and education efforts. He actively works with investors on a variety of subjects ranging from asset allocation to trading to articulating the growing influence that index providers hold in the asset management industry. He produces a daily update called China Last Night (www.chinalastnight.com), which also appears as a column on Forbes.com. Prior experience includes over ten years with Barclays Global Investors (subsequently BlackRock’s iShares), which he joined in 2001 during the rollout of their ETF business.

Brendan graduated from the College of the Holy Cross and has a Master of Science in Financial Analysis from the University of San Francisco.

Chinese E-Commerce sales reached $749 billion* in 2016 (compared to $394.9 billion in the U.S.) an increase of 26.2% year over year.
China's internet population reached 721 million people, a penetration of only 52.2%. The U.S. internet population reached 287 million people, a penetration rate of 88.5%.
Total Chinese retail sales reached $4.8 trillion in 2016, an increase of 4.4%.
Online shopping accounted for 15.5% of retail purchases in China in 2016.

MSCI China A-Share Inclusion Decision 2017

This June Mainland Chinese equities (A-shares) are again up for inclusion into MSCI’s definition of China within their Global Standard Indexes. Why is this important to global investors? MSCI indexes have $10 trillion in benchmarked assets with $1.6 trillion tracking the MSCI Emerging Markets Index alone. The inclusion could trigger significant inflows into Mainland Chinese equities.
