Detecting Repeatable Performance

Retail and institutional investors assign far too much weight to past investment performance to assess potential future performance. Using current methods of performance evaluation, there is no ability to forecast future performance based on past performance. The problem is luck. With a large number of investment managers, many will look skilled when they have simply been lucky. Professor Harvey details four new research initiatives that each has the goal of separating skill from luck.

The Blockchain Identity

Blockchain has the potential to become next big disruptive technology. Professor Harvey has for three years taught a graduate course called Innovation and Cryptoventures which focuses on this new technology. The presentation provides an introduction to blockchain detailing both public and private implementations. The emphasis is on applications ranging from: cryptocurrency/central bank digital currency, machine to machine transactions, identify verification, Internet of Things, property transfer, digital twins, supply chain, marketing and media, security of private data, money transfer, Fedcoin, voting, and financial reporting.

Which Betas are Smart?

There is a flood of so-called “smart” beta product and much of the product is not “smart”. Professor Harvey applies some of the same tools that are used for evaluating performance of investment managers to identify the betas that are most likely to have a premium in the future.
