A Financial Analyst Looks at the National Debt

In this presentation I construct a public debt ratio that takes into account the debt held internally vs. externally and I compare that to the national wealth. This is a superior measure of the public debt burden than is comparing debt to GDP.

Sorting Out the Issues in the Indexing Debate

I organize the issues that arise in the discussion of whether passive or active management is better. I talk about some of the difficulties in performance measurement that makes this issue hard to resolve.

Misunderstanding Risk

This presentation deals with behavioral finance. It looks at the human biases that cause people
to make poor decisions.

Retirement Investing: The Five Most Important Things You Need to Know
Why Wall Street Needs a New Business Model

The business model of the financial industry is the best business model in the world - if you're the business. If you're the customer, it's the worst. It's the only business model in which American consumers spend a minimum of $30 billion a year and don't even realize it. And what they might even think they're paying doesn't strike them as much money. This business model is to charge a fraction of assets. There is virtually no industry in which a person in the lower middle class spend thousands of dollars a year and has no idea they're doing it. Wall Street will tell you it's how this business must work. Yet somehow the medical industry manages to keep us healthy without charging us continuously. The legal industry can keep our legal affairs in order without charging us continuously. The person who cuts our hair can do it. But Wall Street wants us to think that we should pay continuously, as if we need their experts to monitor our money in real time. It's time to change.
