Bio

Wandile is an Obama Leader, dynamic speaker, political analyst, adjunct professor, and architect who holds a master’s in architecture from Andrews University in Michigan. He is a Resolution Fellow, One Young World ambassador, and the CEO of a social impact architecture firm, Ubuntu Design Group, The Anti-Racist Hotdog, and Ubuntu Architecture Summer Abroad Design Justice school. You can check him out on Twitter & Instagram: @wandileubuntu

Diversity and inclusion are core themes for Wandile in serving his purpose as an architect as a result of his upbringing and life experiences. He was born during apartheid South Africa, attended a high school in Zimbabwe, and then went on to complete his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in architecture at the most ethnically diverse university in the United States; Andrews University in the state of Michigan. These diverse experiences around the world have shaped his understanding of the different environments around him and the importance of inclusion, which embraces the cultural roots that different communities are drawn to.

He brings a refreshing and insightful perspective to the topic of diversity that’s based on the power of listening to others. The principle of Listen to Understand, empowers him to form decisions on the basis that everyone has a seat at the table. Everyone has an equally weighted voice which translates to a collective vision of a space that is guaranteed to be representative and attractive to different cultural and contextual values. By acknowledging, respecting, and appreciating different value systems, diversity can thrive, allowing everyone to be heard. This creates a space that represents a community of inclusion and mutual understanding. That is the true power of ‘Listen to Understand’; it creates an atmosphere of physical and contextual sustainability.

Listen to Build (Architecture)

“Architecture is just a frame and people are the big picture” - Obi Okolo

Wandile grew up in post-apartheid South Africa which embodied the architecture of that era, marred and purposed for oppression. He believes that despite this oppression experienced in his country; architecture is a beacon of commonality and love shared among communities, therefore taking a leading role in designing a space which speaks to the people that fill it up.

This talk explores how architecture is a beacon of commonality. Listening empowers people to become a part of the process by speaking up about what they want, choosing how they wish to live. It also trains leaders on how to be better listeners.

Listen to Understand (Diversity + Inclusion)

Listen to Lead (Obama Inspired Leadership)

“We Are The One We’ve Been Waiting for.”

Wandile’s philosophy of leadership, largely informed by his time working with the Obama Foundation as an Obama leader, centers around the embodiment of three words: intentional, individual and influence-- all of which are rooted in the idea that true leadership is achieved when you are able to create an environment that gives others the opportunity to lead. This approach to leadership relies on the continual discovery and leadership of self; the fundamental understanding of one’s individuality and unique perspective as the path to accessing influence. This talk is about the intentional application of fully understood individual influence that allows a leader to make a lasting impact on their community, institution, and world in a way that has never been seen before. According to 2018 research from McKinsey shows, greater diversity in the workforce results in greater profitability and value creation.

What I love most about his insights is that it comes from a place of actually stepping up and acting on his believes himself, not just the theory. I'd highly recommend Wandile if you want an inspirational view of the future through the lens of someone who's rolled up their sleeves and is doing the work.

  • I've known Wandile for at least 10 years, and got to work with him on his first project at Umbumbulu. The one thing that has been consistent, is that he believes in change, particularly, change for the marginalized. But the more impressive factor is that he's always willing to be the change.

  • Wandile has a charismatic speaking style that intertwines his personal stories with bigger issues at the local, national, and global levels. He clearly articulates the problems he discusses, and then creates uplifting and realistic solutions to address those problems, all while gripping the audience and keeping their attention throughout. Furthermore, his knowledge of architecture, urban planning, and life in a postcolonial society engages the audience in an intellectual endeavour but using accessible, easy-to-follow language and analysis. Overall, Wandile is a phenomenal speaker who is simultaneously critical of common issues and encouraging to audience members who are looking for long-term, sustainable solutions.
